Monster Girl Extravaganza Day 7!
Taking me a bit to get through these, but here we have Grisaille with Demon Girl Evolution
First of all, tell us a little about yourself? Online or Offline.
unknown nodeI’m a writer and artist who’s long given up on fixing my sleep schedule.
Where does your inspiration come from? What childhood books, or movies were your biggest draw?
I read a ton of manga and watched a lot of anime growing up. Some of my favorites were Fullmetal Alchemist, anything by CLAMP (especially xxxHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles), and Pandora Hearts. Also Mob Psycho 100, which isn’t from my childhood, but I can’t not mention it.
What was your first story on Royal Road and how did it grow you and your brand from there?
My very first story was on a different account; I posted it on a whim without knowing anything about Royal Road. It was pure high fantasy and ended up getting something like 13 followers throughout its entire run. Suffice to say, you probably haven’t heard of it.
The exciting part, tell us about this newest release?
unknown nodeI’m terrible at describing stories (you can probably tell from my blurbs), but Demon Girl Evolution is, in fact, about a demon who evolves. Shocking, I know. It has numbers going up, vaguely surreal descriptions, and the main character is pretty much a manifestation of my love of morally-questionable, tall, muscular female characters. I think the real takeaway with Monster Girl Month is that if you want to see more of something in stories, sometimes you just have to sit down and do it yourself.
What made you choose to tell this particular story?
When I first heard about Monster Girl Month, I was going through a very rough patch of life. I hadn’t posted on my main account in a while, and the main reason I decided to join was to try and get back my love of writing by writing something casual and low-stakes. I’m happy to say it’s worked and Demon Girl Evolution has been incredibly fun to write so far.
What have you learned with previous writing that you’ve harnessed here? Ie what is your writing process?
unknown nodeI’d say the main one is to not overthink things. I tend to do a lot of planning before writing, and I always will, but sometimes I get lost in the little details when what I really need to do is just sit down and write.
What is your biggest regret with writing? Or your hardest lesson learned?
unknown nodeHonestly? Not writing more. Life loves throwing curve balls and sometimes there just isn’t enough time, but I’ve come to realize that in today’s world, you often have to consciously make time to do the things you love.
If you could tell our new authors 3 things that helped you get to where you are today, what would they be?
1. Be realistic. Every author has dreams of making it big, but you should always temper those expectations with reality.
2. Know your goals. Are you writing purely for fun? Are you trying to earn money? Your exact goal will affect your writing process and the things you write, so you need to be honest with yourself when you decide on your priorities.
3. Have fun. Cheesy, I know, but I had to add 3 things so I’m doomed to be a little cheesy. Burnout comes for us all, and usually the difference between authors who make it through and authors who stop posting forever comes down to how much you actually enjoy the process of writing.
Any other parting nuggets of wisdom?
If you ride a bus from the first stop all the way to the last stop, get off and make four left turns, stand in the middle of the next crossroads you encounter, then chant ominously, you might just summon a demon. Probably.
